The Gospels’ narratives concerning Christmas are full of the supernatural. They clearly purport to be faithful accounts and they lose all meaning if we were to remove the miraculous elements that are woven into them. It would be like removing the ear of corn from the husk and throwing away the ear and keeping the husk. Yet we need to be careful even in using the word “supernatural.” A better word or phrase would be that these narratives are faithful accounts of “the merciful and gracious miraculous acts of the true and living God.”
