The Word is the source of the general or natural revelation of God. As John continues with his Gospel we learn that the Word is also God’s only begotten Son. The Lord Jesus Christ is also the source of eternal life or spiritual life and has he came into the world as the Word made flesh he gives special revelation of the knowledge of God. This is the revelation of God’s saving grace – or the revelation of salvation secured by the Lord Jesus Christ through his life, death and resurrection. John uses a play on words in 1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The word “overcome” can also be translated “comprehend.” John makes it clear that though the Word Incarnate – the Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to bring God’s saving grace not all received him. The darkness of human sin leaves us unable to comprehend this light so that we might come to know life.
